How it works

How to use this roi calculator

  1. Enter the amount invested or spent.
  2. Enter the amount returned or recovered.
  3. Read ROI and net profit.

Formula

The calculation formula

ROI % = (Return − Cost) ÷ Cost × 100
01

Subtract the investment cost from the amount returned.

02

Divide that net profit by the cost.

03

Multiply by 100 to express ROI as a percent.

Worked examples

Example calculations

Positive return

An outlay of $1,000 that returns $1,250 earns $250, which is a 25% ROI.

A loss is a negative ROI

The same $1,000 that returns $800 is a $200 loss and a −20% ROI. Cost must be greater than zero.

When to use it

Common use cases

  • Compare a simple campaign or project return
  • See whether a purchase earned or lost money
  • Turn a dollar profit into a percent of cost

Limits

Assumptions and limits

  • ROI divides net profit by cost, not by the return.
  • Time, compounding, taxes, and fees are not included.
  • Currency display uses USD rounding to 2 decimal places.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Does this include the time the money was invested?

No. This is a simple ROI. Annualized or time-weighted returns need a holding period and a different method.

What counts as the return?

Enter the money you got back: sale proceeds, recovered value, or campaign revenue. Do not subtract cost first; the calculator does that.
