How it works
How to use this weighted grade calculator
- Enter each category name, weight, and score.
- Choose whether a blank score is omitted (weight redistributed) or counted as 0.
- Read the course percent, a 10-point letter band, and any weight-sum note.
Formula
The calculation formula
Course grade = Σ(score × category weight) ÷ Σ(used weights)Multiply each category score by its weight.
Add those products.
Divide by the weights that are actually used. Missing work can be omitted or counted as 0.
Worked examples
Example calculations
20%×90 + 20%×80 + 40%×85 + 20%×88 = 85.6%. On a 10-point band that is a B.
If the 20% final is blank and omitted, the other 80 points of weight average to 85%. If that blank is counted as 0, the course grade is 68%.
When to use it
Common use cases
- Apply a syllabus that lists category percents
- See a course grade before the final is in
- Compare dropping a missing category versus scoring it as zero
Limits
Assumptions and limits
- Weights are relative. They do not have to sum to 100, but the page warns when they do not.
- Omit missing scores drops those categories and renormalizes over the rest.
- Count missing as 0 keeps the category weight and uses a score of 0.
- Letter bands are A ≥ 90, B ≥ 80, C ≥ 70, D ≥ 60, F below 60. Plus/minus cutoffs are not applied.
- This is a course percentage, not a GPA. Convert letters to points on the GPA pages.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
How is this different from a weighted average?
The math is the same weighted mean. This page is built for syllabus categories, missing-work rules, and a course letter band.
What if my weights do not add to 100?
The grade still divides by the weights you used. A 20/20/40 split behaves like 25/25/50. The warning is there so you can match the syllabus.
Should I omit a missing final or count it as zero?
Omit it if the teacher will grade only completed categories. Count it as 0 if the missing work already sits in the average as a zero.
