How it works
How to use this high school gpa calculator
- Enter each course, letter grade, level, and credit value.
- Leave unused rows blank or set credits to 0 to skip them.
- Read unweighted GPA, weighted GPA, and the stated scale version.
Formula
The calculation formula
Unweighted GPA = Σ(base points × credits) ÷ credits; Weighted GPA adds +0.5 Honors or +1.0 AP/IBConvert each letter to the 4.0 table: A=4.0 through F=0.
For weighted GPA, add 0.5 for Honors or 1.0 for AP/IB. F stays 0.
Multiply by credits and divide by total credits.
Worked examples
Example calculations
English A Regular, Algebra B+ Honors, Biology A- AP, and History B Regular: unweighted (4 + 3.3 + 3.7 + 3) ÷ 4 = 3.5. Weighted (4 + 3.8 + 4.7 + 3) ÷ 4 = 3.875.
AP F and Regular A, 1 credit each, average to 2.0 on both scales because a failing grade stays 0.
When to use it
Common use cases
- See both unweighted and weighted GPA on one transcript
- Compare Regular, Honors, and AP course choices
- Estimate a year GPA from credits and letter grades
Limits
Assumptions and limits
- Scale version: US High School 4.0/5.0 (KE 1.0).
- Letter table: A=4.0, A-=3.7, B+=3.3, B=3.0, B-=2.7, C+=2.3, C=2.0, C-=1.7, D+=1.3, D=1.0, F=0. A+ is not a separate value.
- Honors adds 0.5. AP and IB add 1.0. F never receives a bonus.
- Districts differ. Some use +1.0 for Honors or a 4.3 A+. This page does not apply those local tables.
- Blank or zero-credit rows are ignored.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
Unweighted uses only the letter on a 4.0 scale. Weighted adds extra points for Honors, AP, or IB so a harder course can raise the average above 4.0.
Is this the same as the college GPA calculator?
No. The GPA Calculator is a college 4.0 semester average with no course-level bonus. Use this page when the transcript marks Regular, Honors, AP, or IB.
Why is my school’s weighted GPA different?
Many districts publish their own bonus and cap. This tool states one common convention (+0.5 Honors, +1.0 AP/IB) so the numbers can be checked. Replace the bonus if your handbook differs.
